The fortified castle was giving way in Scotland to palaces modelled on French chateaux such as Falkland Palace, and in England, Henry VIII indulged in an orgy of palace building in fashionable red-brick. The familiar black-and-white half-timbered houses were built to accommodate the growing middle-class but the great mediaeval monasteries were pulled down, leaving only romantic ruins.
